Italicizing abbreviations

Question:

Can you tell me whether the abbreviations of titles of legislation should be italicized? For example, is it correct to write Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA)? Or should it be (CEAA) with no italics?

Answer:

Do not italicize the abbreviation of a title of legislation, especially when it follows the title written in full. Readers not familiar with the legislation may think that the abbreviation is part of the title. The Canadian Style backs this up: while it does not mention abbreviations specifically, it states that short forms of the names of statutes should not be in italics.
