Spacing after a period

Question:

I am wondering whether there should be one space or two after a period. Is the rule the same in French?

Answer:

According to The Canadian Style, there is no space before and one space after a period.

Using two spaces is considered the "old way" and one space the "new way." People who learned to type on a typewriter were taught to put two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. This created a visual break that helped readers pick up the start of a new sentence. In both English and French, there is only one space after a period.
