When to capitalize birthday and anniversary

Question:

Do I capitalize the words birthday and anniversary when used in a message such as congratulations on your 85th birthday or your 50th wedding anniversary?

Answer:

The words anniversary and birthday are not capitalized in this context.

In a title, anniversary and birthday should be capitalized, as any significant word in a title should be. For example:

  • On a card:
    Happy 85th Birthday
    For Your 50th Wedding Anniversary
  • On a scroll:
    Congratulations on Your 100th Birthday
  • On a banner or poster:
50th Wedding Anniversary of Jean and Jeanne

However, in general writing (such as in a letter), there is no need for capitals.
